Group show curated by Basak Malone
November 16-30, 2007Opening Reception: Friday, November 16, 6-8pm
Broadway Gallery is pleased to present Hotel, a group show of
international artists curated by Basak Malone. The exhibition is
centered around the very concept of the “hotel” as seen in a variety of
interpretations—as a temporary residence, an area of rest for
travelers, the spot of seedy sexual rendezvous, or even a metaphor for
the body as the brief dwelling of the soul.
Indeed, the liminal nature of the hotel seems to exert a distinct
allure for artists and intellectuals. French writer and thinker Maurice
Blanchot spent much of his life in hotels and based many of his stories
there, and the Hotel Chelsea has been a famous haven and inspiration
for artists in New York since it opened in 1905.
The Hotel exhibition brings artists using a variety of mediums from
oil paint to mixed media installation. The exhibiting artists Sibylle
Burr, Carl Hoare, Gun Mattson, Suzanne Vandeboom, Reuven Shezen, Thomas
Goekint, Whitney McVeigh, Crystal Fischetti, Nicolas Saulière, Ellen
Benjoya Skotheim, Marco Antonio Abbagnara, and Henk Roozendaal create a
visual debate that reveals their own interpretation of the “hotel”.
