December 1 - 15, 2007
Closing Reception: Thursday December 13, 6 - 8pm
Broadway Gallery is pleased to present the work of Katerina Kampiti,
a Greek photographer living in New York. Featuring two bodies of work,
“Astoria Nocturnes” and “Οδός ΚΑΜΠΙΤΗ (Kampiti Street),” the exhibition
presents Kampiti’s exploration of place and cultural identity.
On view in the front gallery, “Astoria Nocturnes”, is a series of
color photographs that Kampiti has been working on for the past year
since she moved to Astoria, Queens from Manhattan. Inspired by night
strolls through her new neighborhood, Kampiti aims to reveal the
process by which memories of places from her past have been reignited
through the studied exploration of her new home.
“Οδός ΚΑΜΠΙΤΗ (Kampiti Street)”, on view in the back gallery, is a
photographic/ video installation presenting members of her family
performing a traditional dance related to the Yianitsari and the Boules
customs that are enacting during carnival time in Greece. Symbolic of
continuing family generations and the passing down of cultural heritage
from one generation to the next, this dance holds a special
significance to Kampiti’s sense of cultural identity.
